Knowing how to get on the Gold!

Post by Geowizard » Thu Jan 29, 2026 2:37 pm

Guys and Gals,

Ask yourself; How do prospectors know where to dig GOLD nuggets? The most common answer is... "Prospectors use metal detectors."

So, the majority of prospectors know how to get on the GOLD. Commercial Exploration Companies use the same tools. The tools use the same technology. The technology is well known. The technology is well understood. The technology is used every day in the search for GOLD and other metals.

When a metal detector responds to GOLD it gives the prospector a distinct TONE. The tone is interpreted by the operator as junk or on rare occasions, the response (tone) is interpreted as GOLD.

This is no news flash to experienced prospectors! The shovel hits the dirt. A detector that is properly set to discriminate between junk and GOLD has a high probability of being on target.

You are probably on the GOLD! A relatively simple tool and experience learning how to interpret the response is about all that is needed.

Large Mining companies and Exploration Companies use the same technology. :)

Stick around! There's more!

Why the technology works;

Many prospectors and wannabe prospectors have little or no understanding of the simple electric and magnetic interaction that makes detection of metals like GOLD possible.

In 25 words or less, "Physics rules.". :o

The rule of induction: A changing magnetic field causes an equal and opposite changing electric field and visa-versa.

The coil of a metal detector generates a changing magnetic field.

The changing magnetic field creates a changing electric field in conductors around the coil. IF conductive metal like gold is within the changing magnetic field, a changing electric field ( current) flows in the GOLD conductor!

The changing electric current generates a second magnetic field. The second magnetic field is proportional to the size and conductivity of the (gold) conductor. Then, the coil, a loop antenna, has an electric current flowing and that is the "response". The detector measures the current and generates a corresponding TONE.

WHEEE!!! :)

Tones are Data:

The State of Alaska contracted Fugro and more recently CGG to fly surveys that measure where the Gold is. The data is like the tone in a metal detector. The tone in a metal detector has TWO qualities. How loud it is gives a sense of "quantity" and the frequency of the tone i.e. "Wheee.." or "Whoa..." gives a sense on quality. Both of these measurements are speaking to the operator on different levels related to Higher or Lower quantity and higher or lower quality.

A metal detector on steroids... :o

The surveys cover thousands of line-miles! The helicopter is flying along survey lines at 60 to 90 mph or approximately 120 to 130 feet per second. It is taking measurements of the earth ten times per second or every 12 to 13 feet. The foot print of the coil system is 60 feet in diameter. A computer is used to store the measurements along with "where" the measurements are being made using differential GPS. Differential GPS locations are more accurate. At the present time, most of the mining districts in Alaska have been surveyed.

Wrapping your head around the data is only a matter of learning a new skill set! :geek:

The data is contained in a database. The database can be viewed on a computer and data can be cut and pasted into smaller databases for each survey line. That gives a cross-section of a mining district. Most of the time - even in known GOLD mining districts, the data is flat line. I use mapping software like Caltopo to create maps of where to get on the GOLD. Gold bearing areas actually show a cross-section profile of a deposit. With GPS coordinates, the locations can be placed on a map to organize a prospecting trip with an objective!

Stick around! There's more! :)

Public Forum;

The unfortunate reality of a public forum is divulging info that is restricted to a limited audience.

I have attempted to share with members of the forum one method that is used by major mining and exploration companies to get on the GOLD.

The tools have been presented along with important concepts that are time proven. Alaska Gold Prospectors are above average! Given the general direction with a willingness to develop new skill sets can provide the insight to what is needed to learn how to get on the GOLD. :)

Discovering NEW Gold using DIGHEM:

To get on the gold, we need to know "where" the gold is. geophysical DATA is FREE. The data is found online Pick your District and download the DATA. unzip the file,

The data file is formatted for Geo software. The viewer is FREE.

Contact me for a Link to the Download page.

Getting organized:

I made a file folder where I store data files.

After downloading the viewer and creating project files, the project files will be stored in the file folder. Expect a slight learning curve. Direct questions to my PM box.

Upon launching the viewer and creating a project, you will see a display of data. You can scroll up and down from one survey line to another.

You can mouse down to the bottom of the data, click and hold the bottom while mousing up and the data viewer window will open. The data you want to view can be selected from the top of the respective data column, clicking and selecting "show data".

You have a graphic display of that survey line.

Start by selecting magnetic data.

Stick around. There's more! :)

Looks like invaluable info Geo especially for someone just getting started. If I was located in Alaska I would be adding these tools to my prospecting arsenal for certain. Thanks for sharing.

Slatco,

Thanks for viewing and commenting.

I live 50 miles from Mexico. I can be "boots on the ground" next day in Alaska. :)

Fun Stuff!
