Re: Flying with Gold
No ribbing because it is common knowledge that most new comers to Nome won't fill a Pint Jar with Gold (lol)). Anyway, I hope you come back with a lot of gold and it will be a lifetime experience for you. Lots of good information from the members on getting your Gold out of Nome. When I worked up in Chicken Alaska I would ship concentrate by the Flat Box Rate. Package it well and it's on it's way.

Re: Flying with Gold
How much GOLD in a baby food jar?
I asked what is the volume of a baby food jar;
What is the volume of a baby food jar?
"Most baby food jars are 4 ounces, but some sizes vary. For example, there are baby food jars that are 3-ounces, 2.5-ounces, and even as large as 8-ounces. While jar size is important, it's also important to let your baby tell you how much they want to eat."
The jar says... 4 oz, 113 grams
https://www.tomthumb.com/shop/product-d ... 55417.html
4 ounces avdp = 113.3981
"Volume" is NOT measured in units of ounces or grams!
Why did I ask?

Wave
Appreciate the help. If I can fill a gallon jug with gold I am sure I can find someone to help me carry it!! In the South we bass fish, a lot. No one asks if you made money bass fishing over the weekend. I am treating my gold mining like my bass fishing, I want to get the most and the biggest but being out there is much better than being at work.
I am trying to temper my loved ones expectations for this odyssey. I told them it could take as many as 2 seasons dredging to fill the whole gallon with gold!! I am keeping it real!!

Re: Flying with Gold
Buyer beware;
What we know:
One gallon = 3785.412 cubic centimeters.
One cubic centimeter of refined GOLD weighs 19.3 grams.
We might be tempted to calculate 3785.412 x 19.3 and get a result of 73058.5 grams = 2,349.14 troy oz = 161.1 pounds avdp. (approx)
Caveat emptor; (buyer beware)
Placer GOLD is not "refined" GOLD;
Placer GOLD contains a long list of impurities "like" Silver, tin, copper! We don't know how much or what impurities there are.
Silver has a density of 10.49 grams per cubic centimeter.
Nome beach GOLD has an average purity of 908 beach to 918 offshore.
https://beringseapaydirt.com/how-pure-are-gold-nuggets/
If we assume the impurities are silver and 900 purity, 90 percent of the total volume is GOLD 0.90 x 3785.412 = 3406.8708 cc x 19.3 = 65,752.6 grams = 2114.23 troy ounces = 144.98 pounds avdp. and 10 percent is Silver 0.10 x 3785.412 = 378.5412 cc x 10.49 = 3970.9 grams = 127.7 troy ounces = 8.76 pounds avdp.
The total revised weight = 153.74 pounds avdp. (approx)
7.36 troy ounces evaporated!
That's why GOLD prospectors and miners NEVER trust refiners! Refiners weigh the "refined" GOLD and it always weighs LESS.

Re: Flying with Gold
So that total revised weight would be for a 153.74 lb avdp. (approx) gallon dore bar, correct ?
In reality placer gold would take up more space in a jar ( depending on mesh size), so the
gallon jar full of placer gold would be lighter than 153.74 lb.
I'm thinking Easy will be able to handle his gallon jar full by himself okay

Dick,
Yes, you are absolutely correct! It's another important point.
I actually had included that same point on the post you quoted but deleted it to avoid belaboring the issue.
Thanks!

Re: Flying with Gold
Measuring pore space;
Viewers might ask; How can you measure the pore space i.e. the volume of the space NOT filled with GOLD?
That is done by filling the GOLD filled gallon container with water and pouring off the water. The volume of the water can be measured in a relatively precise graduated cylinder. Preferably, the volume of water is measured by weighing the water in grams and converting to cubic centimeters. Note that each time the gallon container with GOLD gets "jostled", the particles of GOLD are rearranged and displace different volumes because of compaction. It's a valid point but belabors the issue IMHO.

Re: Flying with Gold
Purity of the GOLD;
I would note also subtracting the volume of the water from one gallon gives the volume of the GOLD.
Weighing the GOLD in grams and dividing by the volume gives the MASS of the GOLD including impurities. It will have a mass LESS than 19.3 grams per cubic centimeter.

Re: Flying with Gold
Accuracy;
"Almost" only counts in Horseshoes and Hand Grenades.
I measure GOLD in grams. I like to measure with accuracy and calculate with precision to four or five digits. The weight of GOLD is important. Accuracy in measurement is important because accuracy is related to "pay". When you see numbers with four or five digits of precision, please don't be offended!
What we are doing here is important. Being accurate and precise is important!
