Permafrost;
Mining in northern latitudes - near the Arctic circle represents a challenge because the ground in many places is permanently frozen.
Mining in permafrost represents a unique problem. There are, fortunately, relatively simple, low cost solutions.
In all cases, the process of converting water from a solid to a liquid involves energy in the form of heat. Traditionally, steam has been used as a source of heat to melt permafrost. The most immediate choice for creating steam is a steam "boiler".
A simple, low cost Boiler;
A boiler in the most simple form is a container that is heated to a desired temperature. The container could be as simple as a steel 50 gallon drum. The nice thing about 50 gallon drums is that they include pipe fittings. The drum can be oriented vertically or horizontally with the smaller fitting at the bottom. Water can be filled into the drum through the larger fitting (bung) at the top. To avoid pressure building up, the drum should always be OPEN to atmospheric pressure.
How to boil water;
With the 50 gallon drum mounted securely on a frame, several feet above the ground, a burner or burners can be positioned underneath.
Propane heat;
Propane burners used for frying turkeys are found at many outdoor cooking supply stores.
Other options;
Diesel heaters and/or furnaces can be fitted to this application. Wood can be used in areas where it is available. Timber can be salvaged from forest fire burns. There may be permitting and fees associated.
Avoiding heat loss;
The boiler should be contained in a relatively small outdoor building that contains heat and excludes outside cold air. External piping and hoses should be wrapped in an insulating foam or fiberglass insulation to avoid heat loss.
Conventional heat tape wrapping can be used to avoid freezing during winter. A Generator would be needed in this case to power the heat tape.
The 50 gallon drum can be enclosed in a heat jacket to contain heat.
Recycle system;
Mine water drains into a "rat hole" - that's the lowest point in the mine.
Water that is produced in the mine/mine shaft can be re-cycled using a sump pump back to the boiler. Filtration or settling of solids can be done in a closed loop water recycling system. GOLD may be recovered in the SOLIDS setting pond.
Pressure sprayer;
Conventional pressure sprayers can be used to add FORCE to the process. An in-line pressure pump can be used to bring the water pressure up to 40 psi to give a 1000 plus psi pressure sprayer the desired inlet pressure.
Controls to adjust flow and pressure can be added as needed for the operation.

A two inch or larger front end pump with a fire nozzle at the working face and equally sized return pump can be installed. Trash pumps and related diaphragm pumps are available in any size to meet the demand.
Boilers can be scaled up by multiplying the number of boilers or the volume of the tanks.
The "fire box" can be designed to be proportional and meet the demand of the operation.
Remote prospectors and miners use boilers for other things like heating homes in the winter!

Good old prospecting;
I learned of Freegold when I started kicking rocks around McGrath back in 2010. They were prospecting Vinisale Mountain near McGrath using the same basic prospecting tools most prospectors use.
Much can be learned from the experience Freegold has published in their News Archive over the past ten years.
They dropped Vinisale and moved their exploration activities to Fairbanks and a relatively LOW profile prospect (Shorty Creek) near Golden Summit. Initial prospecting was lack-luster from the view of an outsider looking in. However, if you look at the news archives with a "prospecting" view, they used a combination of sampling, geophysics and drilling on inferred mineralization as a direction finder. Each year the direction changed toward higher grade intercepts.
It's a real GOLD prospecting success story!

Does the name "Barry Clay" have any significance to anyone? How about the Alaska Centennial Nugget?
Barry Clay found the largest GOLD nugget in Alaska - the Alaska Centennial Nugget! It weighs 294.10 Troy Ounces.
The Alaska Centennial nugget (reportedly) was found on Swift Creek. If you look at Alaska Mapper - there are NO mining claims on "Swift Creek".
Now that we have cut our teeth at Council, let's do some GOLD prospecting!

Suggested reference material;
Most Remote Prospectors understand the importance of reference material. Having a background on the mining district gives us an overview of the localities within the district that were significant in past GOLD production.
PAST performance is an indicator of FUTURE performance.
The project report says there are over 9,000 anomalies! Let's check it out!

The GOLD is buried;
Perception is reality! If you can't see it, it isn't there!
"From 1908 to 1995, placer mines have recovered 476,751 ounces (14.8 Tonnes) of gold work $185 million at current prices. Principle producing streams include Long, Midnight, Greenstone, Monument, Birch, and Trail Creeks in the northern half of the area and Timber Tamarack, Spruce, and Poorman Creeks in the southern half. Byproduct tin and silver have been recovered from the placer deposits. There are no past producing hardrock mines in the area, despite recent (1980s) mineral exploration efforts. Gold quartz veins have been located as streambed float, and a promising group of lead-zinc silver deposits have been explored by trenching at Beaver creek near Boston Dome. The chief problem facing the modern explorationist is the extensive cover of windblown loess that blankets the entire region from valley floor to ridgetop. Less than 1 percent of the area contains bedrock outcrops or control (compared to about 4 percent in the Fairbanks area)."
Where to begin prospecting;
Over many years of GOLD prospecting, I am often asked the question,
"Where should I begin prospecting for GOLD?"
It's a good question that gets the simple reply, "At a GOLD mine!"
As shown in the Freegold Ventures example, above, a known GOLD show can have peripheral GOLD that remains hidden from view! Careful prospecting can result in new discoveries.
The Ruby - Poorman mining district is a good example of an area that has produced half a million ounces of placer GOLD and NO hardrock discoveries! I first looked at this area in 2012. One of the members of this forum was a partner with Barry Clay. After reading about the Alaska Centennial Nugget, I became very curious about what other hidden "Elephant" GOLD may be buried and waiting to be found!

As we look at the survey, it will become apparent that anomalies can often be correlated with actual existing placer GOLD mining operations. We will also see cases where there are NO placer mining operations. That case may indicate a potential undiscovered placer GOLD deposit within the erosion model. Comparing LODE anomalies with existing placer mining and others without existing or past mining becomes an interesting method of GOLD prospecting!
Locations can be viewed on any mapping software. Google Earth and Caltopo are simple, easy to use online map viewers. Caltopo can be used FREE. A subscription is required for advanced use.
Caltopo Format:
Caltopo requires UTM GPS coordinates to be entered in this format: 5W 0385785E 7166857N
You can add markers and label the markers.
Mapping always has a reference DATUM. The Datum used here is WGS84/NAD83.
Remote GOLD prospectors having knowledge of the GPS locations of anomalies can go out and get boots on the ground with the added confidence that mineralization is below their feet!

The first TEN survey lines show a single zone of mineralization that starts at Little Joe Creek and continues from one line to the next.
